Lleyton Hewitt dismisses Andreas Beck in straight sets on Friday to reach the Halle semifinals. Hewitt is joined in the last four by Philipp Petzschner, who took out Lukas Lacko.
Lleyton Hewitt beat Andreas Beck 7-6(0), 6-1 in the quarterfinals of the Gerry Weber Open on Friday. Hewitt overcame a slow start to race past Beck in one hour and 24 minutes, setting up a clash with another German, Benjamin Becker.
Beck and Hewitt exchanged one break of serve each en route to a first-set tiebreaker, and that's when the No. 8 seed began to take control. Hewitt blanked his wild card opponent in the decider and from there it was all over. The 32nd-ranked Aussie dropped only five points in his last four service games, so two breaks were more than enough for Hewitt to take the second set with ease.
"I'm pretty happy with where I'm at at the moment," said Hewitt, who finished with an impressive 13 aces. "I come here with a positive attitude and know what I've got to do. I think the more matches you get the better the confidence is going to go up as well."
The German fans had better luck with Philipp Petzschner, who gave them a second semifinal participant when he defeated Lukas Lacko 6-4, 6-3. Petzschner dropped serve only once and advanced after one hour and 14 minutes of play.
One break in the first allowed the world No. 41 to serve out the set at 5-4 because he fought off all four of the break points he faced in the opening frame of play. Petzschner donated his own serve once in the second, but he consistently abused Lacko's second serve and that earned him additional three breaks, including the final blow at 5-3.
Next up for Petzschner is top-seeded Roger Federer.
