While upsets have rocked Queen's Club, Roger Federer is cruising in Halle. Federer beats Philipp Kohlschreiber in straight sets on Friday to reach the semifinals.
Roger Federer continued his routine trip through the Gerry Weber Open draw on Friday, taking out Philipp Kohlschreiber 7-5, 6-3 in quarterfinal action. Federer needed one hour and eight minutes to set up a meeting with Philipp Petzschner.
The world No. 2 faced his only break point of the match at 1-1 of the first set following a double-fault at 30-30, but he saved it with a service winner. Neither man saw another break point en route to a 6-5 Federer advantage. That's when Kohlschreiber cracked, as the 35th-ranked German fell behind 0-30 and eventually surrendered serve for the first time.
Federer ended up going on a five-game streak, from 5-5 in the first to 3-0 in the second. The Swiss' service break at 1-0 was enough for him to close out the proceedings the rest of the way. Federer lost a mere four points in his last five service games.
"It was a bit of a bumpy start, but then I found my rhythm," said Federer, who wrapped up his effort with 12 aces, one double-fault, and 35 of 39 first-serve points won. He has won this tournament five times in eight tries and he has not lost a set yet this week.
