Roger Federer eases past Alejandro Falla on Thursday in Halle. Nikolay Davydenko is not as fortunate, losing his second-round match to Benjamin Becker.
Roger Federer needed just 51 minutes to reach the quarterfinals of the Gerry Weber Open on Thursday. Federer crushed Alejandro Falla 6-1, 6-2 to set up a meeting with Philipp Kohlschreiber.
The top-seeded Swiss also rolled over Falla in the second round of the French Open, and this one was no different. Federer lost only five points in his first four service games and seized two breaks before closing out the opening frame of play at 5-1.
Two breaks were also more than enough for Federer in set two. The world No. 2 saved one break point in each set and he won all 12 of his first-serve points in the second.
Nikolay Davydenko crashed out of the tournament, losing his second-round match to Benjamin Becker on Thursday. Becker, who also crushed Davydenko at Wimbledon in 2008, prevailed 6-3, 6-4 in one hour and 12 minutes.
Playing on his preferred surface of grass, the 52nd-ranked German needed only one break in each set to comfortably get past Davydenko. Becker saved two break points in the first set and faced none in the second before serving out the match at love at 5-4.
Becker fired six aces, did not double-fault, and won 74 percent of both his first and second-serve points.
