  • Bottom half wide open as Djokovic and Roddick ousted

    6/10/10 9:45 PM | Cheryl Murray
Bottom half wide open as Djokovic and Roddick ousted The bottom half of the draw at the AEGON Championships is without its two top seeds. Both Andy Roddick and Novak Djokovic suffered early exits in Thursday’s third round.

Dudi Sela def. Andy Roddick 6-4, 7-6(8)

In the upset of the tournament, Israel’s Dudi Sela took out last year’s Wimbledon finalist Andy Roddick in straight sets. Sela played an outstanding match, though he was helped along by Roddick’s insistence in coming to net. The American was passed over and over by an on-fire Sela. Roddick failed to break Sela’s serve in the match, having just one opportunity to do so in the opening set.

Match point was brilliant from the Israeli. The two men were engaged in a tight tiebreaker – and on the last point of the match, Sela hit a diving volley winner that is destined for the highlight reels.

Xavier Malisse def. Novak Djokovic 6-3, 4-6, 6-2

The bizarre results continued in London as No. 2 seed Djokovic took the court. The Serb has never been at his best on grass courts, but the third round exit is still quite the upset. The Belgian’s serve did not even play a huge role in the win; it was Malisse’s return game that did the damage. Djokovic faced 9 break points in the match; Malisse converted on 4 of them.

Djokovic’s loss leaves No. 7 seed Sam Querrey as the highest ranked player in the entire bottom half.

If it goes with seeding now, the other SF will BE the final.

well, murray is in trouble..
he is into a 3rd set and it is 3-3 in that..
had the match continued yesterday, he would have won it..
but a new day and anything can happen!!

clayking , 6/11/10 6:00 AM

I'm afraid you're right clayking. After losing the 1st set, he has gained momentum in the 2nd which should have carried on...now it's back to square 1. :-(

Andy started slowly, as per usual, is why he lost the first set. Looked like a no 1 in second, then a no 201 at start of third. Groan.

This year's Queens is not good for the nerves of players or their fans. Blaming the weather is no help either although it will be good preparation for Wimby since it is rare not to have rain, wind and cold conditions at some time during the fortnight. At least the Centre Court now has its retractable roof to cut down on rain delays.

Deuce: Dont get too disheartened. At least Andy is not alone in struggling at this tournament!

why are so many top players falling apart? so did not expect roddick to lose here..and although djokovic is not strong on grass, again i expected him to go through...what on earth is happening??
and does anyone know whats happening with gilles simon? i thought he's gonna come back to the tour this grass season..i miss that guy!

mriiidula , 6/11/10 10:19 AM

mridula,
Gilles simon has a right knee injury from which he has recuperated!!
but he thinks he is not fit enough to return back to tour and hence waiting to be fit enough..
so he would be back only after wimby or later..

clayking , 6/11/10 10:42 AM

cheers, ed. It just does my head in when he plays so well AND so badly in the space of 15 minutes!!

deuce , 6/11/10 11:05 AM

mriiidula: It's sad Gilles has been out of action for so long. He's a favourite of mine too.

ed251137 , 6/11/10 12:14 PM

vrael: cheers. I love Simon too, plays like Andy, only not quite so good.

deuce , 6/11/10 1:12 PM

S**t! He's blown it. How could you Andy. But have to admit Mardy was playing very, very well.

ed251137 , 6/11/10 2:04 PM

Seems Fish's 'too-dark' tactics worked in his favour ... questionable yet effective.

smr , 6/11/10 2:12 PM

What happened last night? I thought both players had to agree to suspend a match.

ed251137 , 6/11/10 2:18 PM

No ed, Andy wasn't consulted at all, that's why he was cross. He was clearly on a roll, having won three games on the trot and really wanted to carry on. C'est la vie! Just put that in for you!

deuce , 6/11/10 3:42 PM

smr, fish can swim but can't see in the dark ;). poor andy, first berdych and now fish.

rfzr , 6/11/10 3:49 PM

oh, btw,
zare, mridula and all other fans of djokoboy,
djokoboy has just upset moodie/norman pair in doubles and is into the semis..
surely happy news for ya people, right??

clayking , 6/11/10 4:17 PM

Well rfzr ... swimming seems to be the optimal skill to have had so far at Queens. ;)

smr , 6/11/10 5:34 PM

clayking, in 2TBs too...whew!

well, he needs all the serving practice he can get..

stu , 6/11/10 5:46 PM

of course, he has more chances to win in doubles, where he doesn't have to serve that often! :D
Anyway, go Nole and Erlich!

OllyK , 6/11/10 6:55 PM

oh no, simon will only come back after wimbledon? shame, i miss him. hope he gets completely fit again.
nice one olly :) but his serve really needs to change. and the sooner the better, because he has so many points to defend from september onwards..
