Defending champion Andy Murray won his opening-round clash against tricky opponent Ivan Navarro in straight sets early Tuesday evening. The World No. 4 is through to the round of 16 at the AEGON Championships.
Andy Murray extended his series lead to 2-0 over Ivan Navarro on Tuesday, holding 10 of 10 service games without facing break point. The Scot captured 86% of his first-service points, en route to recording the 7-6(8), 6-3, second-round victory in one hour and 26 minutes of play.
A close opening set contained no service breaks for either player. Murray led 3-1 in the tie-break after showcasing his skill at net. Navarro fought back, leveling the breaker at 4-4. The Spaniard reached set point at 6-5 and again at 8-7, but failed to convert. The Scot missed a set point of his own at 7-6, then held another at 9-8. A well-timed backhand strike closed the set for Murray in 47 minutes.
The defending champion kept the momentum to earn a 2-0 advantage in the second set. Passing through the remainder of the contest untroubled, Murray held double match point at 5-3. A forehand winner off the return sealed the straight-set win for the Scot in 86 minutes.
Murray ended the day with six aces and two of 4 break point opportunities converted.
The defending champion will face either 13th seed Santiago Giraldo or Mardy Fish in the next round.
