The grass-court seasons of Marcos Baghdatis and Juan Carlos Ferrero get off to a slow start on Monday in Halle. Baghdatis falls to Philipp Petzschner and Juan Carlos Ferrero goes down against Dominik Meffert.
Dominik Meffert lost in the final round of qualifying on Sunday, but he suddenly finds himself in the second round of the Gerry Weber Open. Meffert entered the main draw as a lucky loser when Michael Berrer pulled out and the German promptly upset Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-3, 7-5 in hone hour and 11 minutes on Monday.
One break in each set was enough for Meffert, who took advantage of the fast grass courts to subdue the former world No. 1. Ferrero stayed competitive throughout the second frame of play, but he surrendered serve at 5-5 before his opponent closed out the proceedings with a final routine service hold. Meffert faced only one break point the entire way and blasted 16 aces. Next up for him is Lukas Lacko, a straight-set winner over Jeremy Chardy.
Ferrero was not the only seeded player to crash out on Monday, as Marcos Baghdatis succumbed to Philipp Petzschner 6-4, 6-3 in one hour and nine minutes. The seventh-seeded Cypriot led by a break early in the first set, but Petzschner broke back with a stellar return game at 3-4 and that proved to be the turning point.
The German earned another break at 5-4 to win the first set and Baghdatis never recovered. Petzschner fought off both of the break points he faced in set two, so one break of his own allowed him to finish off the victory on serve at 5-3. After striking five aces and five double-faults, Petzschner set up a second-round clash with Viktor Troicki.
Lleyton Hewitt avoided the upset bug in convincing fashion as he routed fellow Australian Peter Luczak 6-2, 6-2. The No. 8 seed dropped a mere nine points in eight service games, fired five aces without double-faulting, and never faced a break point.
Hewitt needed just one hour and one minute to book a meeting with Thiemo De Bakker, who dismissed Rohan Boppana 6-4, 7-6(11).
