Richard Gasquet def. Kei Nishikori 6-3, 6-3
Japanese upstart Kei Nishikori, ranked No. 201 in the world was sent packing in straight sets by resurgent Frenchman Richard Gasquet. The match was closer than the scoreline suggests. Nishikori had 3 chances to break the Frenchman in the opening set and 5 chances in the second – he was unsuccessful each time. Gasquet fared far better. He secured 2 breaks of serve in the opening set and another early in the second to take the straight set win. The win sends Gasquet into the second round against Rajeev Ram of the United States.
Robby Ginepri def. James Ward 6-3, 7-5
The last American standing at the French Open last week now finds himself in the second round of Queen’s Club. The first grass-court tournament of the season kicked off on Monday in London. Ginepri defeated Great Britain’s James Ward in straight sets. Ward received a wildcard into the tournament; the Brit is ranked 344 in the world. Ginepri secured an early break of serve in the opening set, but he had a bit more difficulty in the second. The two men traded breaks of serve before Ginepri managed a second break with Ward serving to force a tiebreaker. Ginepri will take on countryman Sam Querrey in the second round.
