Roger Federer beats Jarkko Nieminen in straight sets on Tuesday in Halle. Federer is through to the second round of an event that he has won five times in eight tries.
Roger Federer kicked off his 2010 grass-court campaign with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Jarkko Nieminen on Tuesday at the Gerry Weber Open. Federer needed just one hour and three minutes to reach the second round and set up a meeting with either Noam Okun or Alejandro Falla.
Nieminen was competitive throughout the opening set and he took care of his first four service games. The 65th-ranked Finn appeared to be on the way to a 5-4 lead serving at 30-0, but two double-faults proved to be the turning point of the match. Two points later, Nieminen pushed a volley wide to give his opponent the break. Federer saved three break points in the set--including one at 5-4--before capitalizing on his third set point with his fifth ace of the match.
With momentum in hand, Federer broke serve immediately for a 1-0 advantage in the second. From there it was all over, as the world No. 2 dropped a mere three points in his last five service games. Nieminen held the rest of the way but he never came close to pulling even. Federer fired six aces in set two while winning 17 of 18 first-serve points. He finished off the proceedings in style on his second match point, blasting his 11th ace.
The top-seeded Swiss, a five-time Halle champion, wrapped up his effort with 11 aces, two double-faults, and 39 of 43 first-serve points won. Nieminen's first serve kept him in the match, but he struggled in the return game and he also won only 36 percent of the points in which he had to toss in a second delivery.
Falla led Okun 6-4, 1-2 when play was suspended due to darkness. Federer played Falla in the second round of the French Open and eased to a straight-set victory.
