Nikolay Davydenko is ready to return to tennis with hopes of starting his comeback next week on grass in Halle, Germany. a field studded with talent headed by Roger Federer and Robin Soderling.
The Russian last played mid-March at Indian Wells on hardcourt. After playing with pain for weeks, Davydenko finally got it checked out, with a scan showing a break. “It was very small and even the doctors didn't find it at first because they thought it was just a bruise,” said Davydenko, a French Open quarter-finalist a year ago. “I just kept playing with pain, taking pills or an injection."
Davydenko has been on court hitting in recent days, stepping up his pace of training after his long absence. “I've never trained as much as now. But I've always come back playing better after long breaks.”
Meanwhile, the Wimbledon injury absence situation is becoming clearer.
Beside long-term injury victim Juan Martin Del Potro, recovering after wrist surgery, Chile's Fernando Gonzalez will also not play. The No 13 has not competed since mid-April in Barcelona, with what is reported as tendinitis of the left knee.
A third South American, 2002 Wimbledon finalist David Nalbandian, is said to be readying a return to action after a hiccuping return following hip surgery 13 months ago.
The All England club finalist eight years ago Lleyton Hewitt was hobbled by an abdominal strain and then a leg problem - his latest setback - but is planning to try and play at Wimbledon after returning to training.
Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who quit his French Open fourth-round match with hip and lower back pain, has been ordered to rest for ten days, which would leave him with no Wimbledon preparation were he given the OK to play.
