Tim Henman has kicked off the Wimbledon prognostication season by tipping compatriot Andy Murray as a possible title candidate at the grass-court Grand Slam.
As the inevitable home pressure mounts on Murray, the Scot, whose clay season was declared a bust, will have to race out of the gates in his grass start next week as defending champion at Queen's club, west London.
But it's at the All England club where four-time Wimbledon semi-finalist Henman believes his compatriot can finally fulfill the national tennis dream. "There's no reason why Andy Murray can't win Wimbledon," Henman told British media. "He's still top five in the world and grass is a good surface for him.
"I don't think it will take him a lot of time to make the transition from the French Open.
After Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal he's definitely in the next bracket of those who could challenge."
The former British tennis hero also came to the defence of the beleaguered sport, which may suffer this summer due to competition from the football World Cup in South Africa. To make sure there is no distraction from "game, set, match," Wimbledon has banned telecasts of any football matches on its large-screen televisions on the grounds.

As Henman has also said he doubts Andy will ever defeat Fed at a slam, he's obviously a two faced so and so! Please will the pundiits just leave Andy ALONE!!
deuce , 6/4/10 7:31 AM
1) the fed
2) roddick n nadal
3) murray
the contendors for wimby imo!!!
vrael , 6/4/10 7:35 AM
There goes the British public and media again.
They put so much pressure on Murray before Wimbledon and US open. Just leave the kid alone for a tournament atleast for God;s sake.
atul1985 , 6/4/10 7:46 AM
Seriously when will the media stop hyping up Andy Murray!
isabeau77 , 6/4/10 7:49 AM
With the best in the business being there at Queens, seems like Queens will be more difficult to win than Wimby! Is Soderling going to Queens or Halle?
vmk1 , 6/4/10 8:20 AM
And so it begins. The pressure, once again, building on Murray.
Winning a Grand Slam is difficult enough without the enormous pressure Murray has to deal with. Honestly, if the media were to just tone it down a little, and stop hyping the guy up so much, maybe he could actually win a slam.
I wish him all the best for Wimbledon.
Champion7 , 6/4/10 8:49 AM
@vmk1.
sodacan is at halle, where he should be 2nd seed, since davyboy won't play in all probability..
here is another example of patriotism..
love your country, support your countrymen..
borg says sodacan is gonna be numero uno..
and henman now says murray will get wimby..
clayking , 6/4/10 9:57 AM
muzzah is going to have to accept that the british public expects a lot from him and will for a while more and find a way to just deal with it. henman had to endure it til the end of his career even though he never went past the SF of a grand slam and most people knew by a certain time that he wasn't going to win one. muzz has no one to share the pressure with him and its a reality he has to handle. i feel for him because brit sends a special press contingent to follow him around which is a bit cruel unless he enjoys it. he has the mentality and game to win a slam but he must pick himself up very soon.
homos , 6/4/10 10:19 AM
Aha! Another fed sod final showdown would be exciting.
vmk1 , 6/4/10 11:03 AM
they have started again. With all this pressure, he'll probally not go beyond quarter finals.
rakten , 6/4/10 12:31 PM
In a way I agree with you homos............its all part of the game. Fed and Rafa have dealt with the media successfully. Andy just has to start to enjoy tennis rather than just playing the game!!! You see......Rafa ENJOYS tennis and he also loves to compete. Andy, to me, does not harbour a passion for the game and therfore in my mind he could never win a GS.......im sorry!
Monalysa , 6/4/10 3:48 PM
murray will not win wimby anytime in his career
There are better players than him who deserve the title
saxenanalin , 6/4/10 3:56 PM
saxenanalin...i think thats a bit harsh!............but i agree Murray does have some work to do!
Monalysa , 6/4/10 5:06 PM
saxenanalin: hmm, if only we all got what we "deserve" in this life......
deuce , 6/4/10 5:55 PM
Roger Federer will not even pass the QF of Wimbledon this year. He is no longer feared by quality players. Look back as far as Miami 2010 up to the present and check out who has given him defeats.
Raindrops , 6/4/10 8:01 PM
@Raindrops.....
Dont be too hasty....................consistency is key!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Most players are inspired during a GS and after you NEVER hear from them again...........before beating Djoker, how many of you knew what Melzer even looked like?!
Players some and go.........Rafa and Federer..........are forever!
Monalysa , 6/4/10 10:30 PM
Hopefully England will still be in the world cup, end June beginning July, and "football fever" will be sweeping the land and all eyes will be off Andy.
deuce , 6/5/10 8:49 AM
Monalysa,
Speaking of consistency, that's why i referred to check consistency of Federer as far back as Indian Wells 2010.
Raindrops , 6/5/10 9:09 AM
@Raindrops
Federer is much better on grass and with his grand slam consistency he will surely reach the finals of wimby
saxenanalin , 6/5/10 9:49 AM
Don't be "too sure" NANALIN, we are talking about the future and both we can do is to speculate based on consistency and the best way to reflect one's consistency is to look back most recent performances of about 4-5 months. With that span of time, Federer is obviously heading to a slump.
Raindrops , 6/5/10 10:18 AM
hahaha
Henman is probably enjoying passing the buck to Murray...Poor guy has had to deal with all these expectations for years, he seems all to happy to pass 'em on to someone else ;-)
bianca , 6/5/10 5:52 PM
Henman must have been asked a leading question and he gave the answer they want to hear, he can't be expectd to say No, I don't think Murray is in the running to win Wimbledon. Ruzedski migh say that if that's what he thinks, because he says what he thinks most of the time.
However, I don't think it's beyond Murray to win Wimbledon, but I think they should stop all the speculation which makes him look like a failure when he doesn't come up to expectations. Let's face it not many people have won a GS recently, someone's cornered the market there, and apart from Rafa dominating on clay, only Rafa, Djoko and Delpo have had a look in on h/c, once each.
Out of the current top 100, only 3 people have won GS titles in the last 6 years.
nadline , 6/5/10 9:00 PM
Oh and Rafa, once on grass as well.
The Queens draw is out - Rafa has got Feli Lopez in his qtr. and Murray who is in Rafa's half has Cilic in his qtr. Djoko has got Querry in his qtr. and Monfils and Roddick should square up in the qtrs.
nadline , 6/5/10 9:05 PM
Corr.
Out of the current top 100, only 6 people have wona GS - Federer, Nadal, Roddick, Hewitt, Djoko and Delpo.
nadline , 6/5/10 9:09 PM
Wooow... nadline...
Never thought about that... only 6...
And about expectation... Muzza has game, has technique... but in his head..?
There is to much pressure for him. They really should let him alone... but crowd is crowd... expect more and more...
You should see serbian sites about tennis... 30 min. after loss from Melzer...there was more than 200 comments... and they were very VERY negative...
zare , 6/5/10 10:23 PM
I would never count Federer out at Wimbledon. Yes, the chances of him being defeated before the final are better than they have been in years, but I still think we're more likely to see him there than not.
cherylmurray , 6/5/10 10:49 PM
Henman is hopefully right about Muzza, but not this year. I'd put a few before him this year. With respect to Federer, what happened at Roland Garros (imo) isn't going to have all that much impact in London. Federer is a far different player on grass than he is on clay.
Btw, at current World No. 18, Juan Carlos Ferrero is also a former GS champ (RG 2003).
Kelli , 6/5/10 11:10 PM
Thanks Kelli, so that makes 7 out of the top 100.
nadline , 6/5/10 11:39 PM
The way our muzz has been since oz, it'll take something unusual to get him beyond the QFs. He may not even make that :(
alex , 6/6/10 1:04 AM
Muzz will reach atleast the semis for sure, dont get to negative alex
atul1985 , 6/6/10 10:37 AM
alex and atul: John LLoyd was asked on BBC if he would prefer Andy to win Wimbledon or England to win the world cup. He was completely flummoxed and couldn't answer for at least 2 minutes. It was mighty funny! P----!
deuce , 6/6/10 10:43 AM
oh well both are impossible!!
but england winning world cup is atleast imaginable!!
clayking , 6/6/10 11:05 AM
deuce: How hilarious. Was it TV or Radio? Four years ago, like many people, I thought Andy was in the Henman mould, then he raised his level and looked a potential champion and I started to believe he could crack a slam. The loss at AO really seemed to derail him but he has shown in the past he can battle through but I fear it will not be in 2010. Do you know what is happening in his personal life?
ed251137 , 6/6/10 11:10 AM
Hi ed: nice to talk to you! It was during the women's final on TV. Viiewers were tweeting questions in. I agree about Andy, he is a class above Tim. I too fear AO derailment and don't think he'll get a slam this year. However, average age of top 10 is 25-26 so time yet. Totally agree about these giant ball bashers too. For me, very, very, boring tennis.
clayking: do hope u have to eat your words, but sadly expect you won't.
deuce , 6/6/10 1:43 PM
oh come on!!
don't lose hope..
England has already accomplished one impossible feat..
winning the t20 WC..
they may do another..
i won't mind murray taking wimby..
but the football WC is too much i'd say!! :P
clayking , 6/6/10 2:02 PM
atul -
hope you're right, seem to remember you making some pretty good predictions recently :)
deuce -
re Lloyd, lol. Can't imagine he's too enamoured with muzz, after muzz was throwing in suggestions for his succession even before he'd even lost his job :)

Rafael Nadal wants a service like Andy Murray's
By Malcolm Folley Last updated at 9:58 PM on 5th June 2010
Rafael Nadal, who will be the new world No 1 if he wins the French Open final today, has tried to incorporate aspects of Andy Murray's service action into his game.
His coach since childhood, his uncle Toni, explained for the first time how the player bidding this afternoon to win his fifth French Open title in six years - and seventh major title in total - has studied tapes of the British No 1.
'Murray has a good, easy action,' said Toni, ahead of the final against Sweden's Robin Soderling.'I see something in his style that I like, especially the way he moves his wrist at the point of impact.'

More like Murray: Rafael Nadal serves in the French Open semi -final
But the Nadals have had problems replicating Murray's motion. While Rafa plays tennis left-handed, he is naturally right-handed and has found it hard to be consistent when he tries to serve like the Scot, who will be joined by the Spaniard in the top half of the draw in London this week when the British No 1 defends his Aegon title at Queen's Club.
'One day, Rafa is good with this serve, the next he is not so good!' said Toni, whose nephew has made the final without losing a set. 'It is hard for him to get that twist with his left wrist.'

Oh, Rafa may be bummed. Didn't he ask for the Real Madrid scores to be posted during breaks in the Rome Masters?
The Brits must have been salivating to begin the pressure on poor Andy M. again.
mara002 , 6/7/10 12:13 AM
I still feel it is Rafa/Roger's tournament to lose! Best of Luck to Murray though.... would love to see a new Wimbly Champ.

Oh for the love of God!
I can name 6 other players who I would place my money on before I picked Murray to come close to winning this.
