Novak Djokovic beats Robby Ginepri in four sets on Monday at Roland Garros. Djokovic is through to a quarterfinal clash with Jurgen Melzer.
Novak Djokovic suffered an early-round hiccup in 2009, but he is back in the French Open quarterfinals for the fourth time in his career.
Djokovic beat Robby Ginepri 6-4, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 in fourth-round action on Monday afternoon. The world No. 3 needed two hours and 17 minutes to set up a meeting with No. 22 seed Jurgen Melzer.
Like he had done in two of his previous three matches, Djokovic came out and handled the first set before a letdown in the second frame of play. Ginepri served at 83 percent in set one and held all the way until 4-5, but he finally cracked with the pressure of serving to stay alive.
The 98th-ranked American bounced back in the second, just as Evgeny Korolev and Victor Hanescu did against Djokovic in rounds one and three, respectively. Continuing to serve well, Ginepri fought off both of the break points he face and he earned two breaks of his own before evening the match with a hold at 5-2.
From there, however, it was all Djokovic all the time. The third-seeded Serb started to get a few more looks and second serves and was able to push Ginepri side to side at the baseline as his forehand kicked into gear. Two breaks allowed Djokovic to serve out the set at 5-1.
The two-time French Open semifinalist ended all suspense with an immediate break in set four and he soon extended it to an overwhelming 4-0 advantage. Ginepri took care of his next two efforts on serve, but he never came closer to recovering any of the breaks. Djokovic lost only five points in his last four service games and he capitalized on his first match point at 5-2 when Ginepri netted a return.
Ginepri, who made his way to the Roland Garros fourth round for the second time in his career, finished with 31 winners and 32 unforced errors. Djokovic, a third-round loser to Philipp Kohlschreiber in 2009, recorded 36 winners against 29 errors.
