  • Ferrer, Ferrero crash out of French Open

Ferrer, Ferrero crash out of French Open Jugen Melzer stuns David Ferrer in straight sets on Saturday and Roland Garros. The upset trend continues later in the day when Robby Ginepri takes out Juan Carlos Ferrero in five.

A shocking turn of events took place at the French Open on Saturday. A third quarter of the draw expected to be dominated by Spaniards was thrown for a loop by two unlikely veterans.

The third-round upset bug began in convincing fashion when Jurgen Melzer hammered a previously on-fire David Ferrer 6-4, 6-0, 7-6(2) in just one hour and 56 minutes. Melzer stuck seven aces, won 80 percent of his first-serve points, and was never broken.

Ferrer came out flat and only got worse after Melzer served out the opening frame of play at 5-4. The 11th-ranked Spaniard, who went into this match with a 35-10 record for the season, did not win a single game in set two while hitting only three winners to Melzer's twelve.

Although Ferrer offered more of a fight in the third, Melzer was simply too tough. The 27th-ranked Austrian came up with clutch service holds at both 4-5 and 5-6 and then dominated the ensuing tiebreaker seven points to one.

This was Ferrer's seventh clay-court event in 2010 and the first time he has lost prior to the semifinals. Melzer, meanwhile, is through to a fourth-round encounter with Russian qualifier Teimuraz Gabashvili.

Later in the day another Spaniard bowed out in shocking fashion when Robby Ginepri stunned 2003 French Open champion Juan Carlos Ferrero 7-5, 6-3, 3-6, 2-6, 6-4. Ginepri needed three hours and 16 minutes to set up a fourth-round showdown against Novak Djokovic.

The 98th-ranked American has recovered from a host of injuries just to stay on the pro tour, and on Saturday he made an improbable recovery from a mid-match momentum shift. After Ginepri won the first two sets, Ferrero won the third and fourth without any trouble and then even went up a break in the fifth.

A back-and-forth fifth set saw Ginepri not only get the break back, but also go up by a break of his own. Despite failing to serve out the proceedings at 5-3, the underdog struck for his seventh break at the match at 5-4 to clinch one of the biggest wins of his career.
