In-form Federer cruises into round of 16 World No. 1 Roger Federer advanced to the final 16 at the French Open on Friday, following his comfortable three-set victory over German qualifier Julian Reister.

Defending champion Roger Federer kept his hope for a 17th Grand Slam title alive Friday afternoon, as he took down third-round opponent Julian Reister in straight sets. The 28-year-old Swiss, remaining on track to win his second Major trophy in 2010, passed through the match without facing break point. Federer secured five of 13 break point chances en route to a 6-4, 6-0, 6-4 win in just 93 minutes.

After missing multiple break opportunities in set one, Federer collected three more at 4-4. A well-constructed point pressured Reister, who struck a volley into the bottom of the net. Double set-point came for the World No. 1 at 5-4. Federer hit an ace to seal the first set in 40 minutes.

The defending champion held a struggling German to a mere 4 points in the second set. Federer won 12 of 13 points on the Reister serve, as he converted 100% of his break point chances. The qualifier had no answer, unable to win more than 9% of his first-service points. The Swiss took 18 minutes to complete the set, 6-0.

A closer third set contained no breaks of serve until the mid-point. Federer led 4-3, having showcased his trademark variety of shot. The World No. 1 reached match point at 5-4, but gifted a rare double fault. The Swiss closed on his second chance, as he crushed a forehand winner.

Federer ended the afternoon with 34 winners to 18 unforced errors.

The defending champion faces 20th-seeded compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka for a place in the quarterfinal. Wawrinka defeated third-round challenger Fabio Fognini in three sets, 6-3, 6-4, 6-1.
