  • Homesick Querrey burned out on clay

    5/26/10 1:35 PM | Johan Lindahl
Homesick Querrey burned out on clay Homesick Sam Querrey finally had enough of Europe after five weeks and an opening loss at the French Open.

The Californian admitted he didn't put in much effort as he went out to compatriot Robby Ginepri, his mind more on the plane trip back to LA than more matches on the detested dirt.

Belgrade champion Querrey admitted that he was "tapped out" and basically quit halfway through the match, leaving him 0-4 for his career at Roland Garros.

"When I lost that second set tiebreaker and got broken in the first game, I was done. I wanted to be off the court," he confessed before pulling out of doubles as well.

Querrey said that staying so long on clay - not at all uncommon for any player save an American - left him drained. He had little good to say about his Belgrade title over compatriot John Isner, his best mate in the game.

"A final is great, it builds my confidence, but I won Belgrade and my ranking didn't move. I'm past that point right now. Those 250s (point tournament) do nothing for me ranking-wise.

"It's all about the Masters Series and the Grand Slams. Those are where I've not been playing well. I just need to mentally get it together in my head, I need to enjoy myself out there. I've got one of the biggest serves out there, but I just tank some points.

"I didn't enjoy myself on the court, I wanted off the court."

Poor Sam ... he is probably just exhausted and will wish he hadn't spoken quite so freely after losing a match.
Get some rest Sam and come back soon.

he's going to regret pulling out of doubles is what he is going to do

^^^^yeah, that. I'm sorry, but he's being a lousy friend. VERY poor form to penalize your partner because you're sick of playing in Europe.

Not good, Sammy.

Well, although he sung praises about Belgrade, it seems like we won't be seeing Sam (t)here next year :(((. However, he's got a point. I think even Nole should be skipping that event.

Anyhow, I feel bad for John for being left hangig without doubles' partner.

Oh Sam, you're behaving like a spoilt brat!

Roddick took Sam under his wing in the early days when Sam turned pro and Andy mentioned that Sam was somewhat of an *after school* player. He just didn't want to put in the time needed to practise and improve upon his game.

John is of a different, more mature mind-set. He went to college, and that alone speaks volumes, because he acquired the discipline and knows what it is to be a team player.

I'd bet my last dollar that Patrick McEnroe probabaly will be following Querrey closely to see what kknd of player he'll be on the Davis Cup team, and thiks inc ident will not be favouravle for Sam when McEnRoe makes his decision . If Sam can't hang around and play doubles after losing his singles match for a few more days, then what will he do in DC?
