Federer advances to third round Defending champion Roger Federer overcame multiple rain delays and a scratchy start on Wednesday, fighting his way through to a 7-6(4), 6-2, 6-4 victory over second-round opponent Alejandro Falla.

World No. 1 Roger Federer is through to round three in Paris, following his straight-sets win against Alejandro Falla of Colombia. Despite a rough beginning to the match, the 16-time Grand Slam champion finished the day in fine form. The 28-year-old Swiss, extending his season record to 21-6, saved seven of 8 break points to complete the contest in two hours of play.

Falla took advantage of an error-prone Federer at 5-5, as he chased down a drop-shot on break point. The Swiss recovered quickly to level at 6-6, aided by a handful of mistakes from the Colombian. After trading mini-breaks in the tie-break, a trademark forehand winner gave Federer a 5-4 edge. Double set-point came in short order for the World No. 1, who closed the 48-minute set on a forehand miss from Falla.

Federer struck early in set two, pocketing a service break at 1-1. The defending champion collected an insurance break midway through to lead 4-1. The World No. 1 kept the momentum, as he fought off triple break-point to reach 5-1. A well-timed backhand sealed the set for Federer at 6-2.

A lengthy rain delay halted play at the beginning of the third set. After resuming, the World No. 1 pocketed a service break at 1-1. Federer passed through the remainder of the match untested, easing to triple match-point at 5-4. A final errant forehand from Falla cemented the win for the Swiss in 120 minutes.

Federer ended the afternoon with six aces and 30 winners.

He will meet Julian Reister for a spot in the round of 16. The German qualifier ousted veteran Olivier Rochus in the second round, 6-2, 6-2, 7-6(5).
