Andy Murray has suddenly re-emerged as a British bet after just one win at Roland Garros. And incredibly, punters now have the option to wager on the clay-shy Scot winning the French Open title.
The hysteria is only a build-up for the hype that will emerge as Wimbledon gets closer. But for the moment, all eyes are on the clay, where Murray came from two sets to love down to overhaul Richard Gasquet in the first round.
Odds have magically emerged for a Murray title - this from the man whose best showing at Roland Garros was a 2009 quarter-final. The fourth-seed now stands 20/1 (21.00) to win the French Open after his dramatic comeback, according to Ladbrokes of London.
Before the fightback against Gasquet, the firm had offered 9/4 (3.25)for Murray, with the bookies now bracing for another roller-coaster fortnight.
"Murray gave us a glimpse of a long Summer ahead," said a spokesman. "His amazing comeback reminded us why punters love him and why a Grand Slam win would cost us a fortune."
Reality is not far from the surface for the hard-edged bookmakers. Clay king Rafael Nadal remains the 4/11 (1.36) favourite to win a fifth Roland Garros title with Roger Federer at 5/2 (3.50) following his easy first-round win.
