Lleyton Hewitt and Fernando Verdasco moved into the second round, as the bottom quarter seed remain intact.
Lleyton Hewitt def. Jeremy Chardy 7-5, 6-0, 6-4
This was a clear case of winning ugly. Australia’s Lleyton Hewitt churned out a straight set victory over a lack-luster Jeremy Chardy. The first set was the most competitive of the match. The only break point for either player came for Hewitt at the tail end of the set, as the Frenchman was serving to force the tiebreak.
The second set was a dismal effort from Chardy. The Frenchman was broken in all 3 of his service games, and he allowed the two break points he had against Hewitt slip by. The Aussie was up 4-2 in the third set, but he threw in a shaky service game of his own to hand it back. By the end of the third set, heavy rain started to fall. With a possible delay looming, Chardy served to stay in the match. Hewitt was able to secure a final service break to close out the win.
Fernando Verdasco vs. Igor Kunitsyn 6-4, 6-2, 6-2
Spain’s Fernando Verdasco was able to shake off his bad loss to Richard Gasquet in the finals of Nice on Sunday. The Spaniard came into Tuesday’s match with the same clay court form he has enjoyed the entire spring. Igor Kunitsyn of Russia had a few chances to break in each set, but Verdasco was by far the superior player on the day. The Spaniard will take on France’s Florent Serra in the second round.
