John Isner eases past Andrey Golubev in straight sets on Monday at Roland Garros. Tomas Berdych makes similarly quick work of Jorge Aguilar.
(17) John Isner d. Andrey Golubev 6-4, 6-3, 6-2
Clearly enjoying the fast, high-bouncing conditions at the French Open, Isner crushed Golubev in a mere 90 minutes on Monday to reach the second round. The 6'9'' American put in 79 percent of his first serves, fired eight aces, never faced a break point, and lost a miniscule nine points in 14 service games. He struck 32 winners and made only 15 unforced errors en route to a meeting with Marco Chiudinelli.
Golubev was competitive until 4-5 in the first set, but Isner broke for a one-set lead and never looked back. One break was all the No. 17 seed needed to win the second frame of play and he raced through the third in a lightning-quick 25 minutes. This is Isner's first career win at Roland Garros, having lost to Juan Ignacio Chela in five sets in his only previous appearance.
(15) Tomas Berdych d. (Q) Jorge Aguilar 7-6(7), 6-3, 6-1
Berdych fought off an early challenge from Aguilar before booking a spot in the second round after two hours and 31 minutes. Maintaining his momentum from having qualified for the main draw, Aguilar did not face a break point in the first set on the way to a tiebreaker. When Berdych pulled out the 'breaker nine points to seven, however, it was all over.
The 17th-ranked Czech took complete control with the first break of the match at 3-3 in the second frame of play. He broke again at 5-3 for a two-set advantage and lost only one game in the third as Aguilar finally stopped providing any resistance. The underdog Chilean struck only 16 winners, whereas Berdych cracked 51 on the way to a second-round clash against Edouard Roger-Vasselin.
