Ernests Gulbis’ quest for a French Open title was cut short on Sunday. In the Latvian’s place in the draw will be France’s Julien Benneteau.
Julien Benneteau has not been playing well on clay in 2010. In fact, coming into Roland Garros, the Frenchman had only won 2 matches – in 4 tournaments. But when he stepped out on the court on Sunday, he played like a clay court expert.
Gulbis was already in trouble before he sustained his thigh injury from a bad slide in the second set. Benneteau was battering the Latvian from the back of the court. Gulbis did not help his own cause by serving at 43% for the set. Benneteau took advantage and secured a pair of service breaks, though he surrendered one of his own.
Benneteau continued to apply pressure in the second set. Gulbis already found himself down a break (at 1-3), when he slid awkwardly and sustained the thigh injury. To his credt, the Latvian attempted to continue playing, but at 0-1 in the third, he could no longer continue. Benneteau will play the winner of Leonardo Mayer and Sergiy Stakhovsky in the second round.
