Marin Cilic and Robin Soderling advance at the French Open in day one action.
Robin Soderling def. Laurent Recouderc
Robin Soderling, 2009 finalist at Roland Garros, got off to a great start in the 2010 edition. The Swede breezed through the first set in 20 minutes. French wildcard Laurent Recouderc didn’t post a single game in the opening set. The middle frame was only just slightly more taxing for the Swede. Court conditions were, like last year, playing faster than normal. The speed is an advantage to a big hitter like Soderling.
The Swede wrapped up the win in straight sets with another service break in the third. Soderling finished the match with 46 winners and just 16 unforced errors.
Marin Cilic def. Ricardo Mello
Croatia’s Marin Cilic had a surprise in the second set from doubles specialist Ricardo Mello. The Croat and No. 10 seed was moving along nicely after an easy opening set, when he suddenly found himself broken. He never earned a chance to gain the break back and Mello was able to tie the match at a set a piece.
Cilic was broken again in the third set, a result of his 47% first serve percentage. But he was able to break Mello twice to take the two sets to one lead. Mello lost any spark he’d had after the third set. The Brazilian had 3 chances to break and could not convert any of them. He would post just one game in the fourth set.
