  • Youzhny, Ouanna advance at French Open

    5/23/10 11:23 PM | Ricky Dimon
Youzhny, Ouanna advance at French Open Mikhail Youzhny kicks off his Roland Garros campaign in winning fashion on Sunday. He is joined in the second round by Josselin Ouanna and Marco Chiudinelli.

    (11) Mikhail Youzhny d. Michal Przysiezny 6-1, 6-0, 6-4

Youzhny opened Sunday's proceedings at Roland Garros in convincing fashion, routing Przysiezny in just one hour and 36 minutes. The 13th-ranked Russian committed only 11 unforced errors while firing 26 winners. He finally dropped serve for the first time in set three, but he added two more breaks of his own before serving out the match at 5-4. Youzhny, the French Open's No. 11 seed, awaits the winner of a suspended marathon match between Lukas Lacko and Michael Yani. Lacko and Yani are at 8-8 in the fifth set and both players have saved multiple match points.

    Josselin Ouanna d. Lukasz Kubot 7-6(5), 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-4

Ouanna seems to save his best stuff for his biggest tournament, as he thrilled the French crowd with a run to the third round last year. The world No. 130 is off to a good start in 2010 after dismissing Koubot in three hours and 35 minutes. After trading a pair of tiebreakers to open the match, Ouanna took control throughout the third and fourth. He faced no break points in the third set and fought off all five of Kubot's chances in set four. A competitive clash saw Ouanna finish with 64 winners and 25 unforced errors while Kubot struck 57 winners against 38 errors. Next up for Ouanna is countryman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

    Marco Chiudinelli d. Somdev Devvarman 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3

A back-and-forth affair resulted in an interesting scoreline, with Chiudinelli getting the best of Devvarman on Sunday evening and avenging a loss earlier this year in Dubai. Devvarman fired 13 aces and recorded a superior winners-to-errors ratio (37 and 27 compared to Chiudinelli's 50 and 56), but he converted a mere three of 13 break chances. Chiudinelli saved his best tennis for last, as he faced no break points in the final set and dropped only four points in his last five service games. The Swiss awaits either John Isner or Andrey Golubev in round two.
