The semifinal spot out of the second quarter of the French Open draw is there for the taking. Andy Murray and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga are among the contenders who hope to take advantage.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has appeared at the French Open on just two previous occasions and he has won only three total matches. In his third trip to Roland Garros, however, Tsonga now has a real chance to treat his fans with a run to the final weekend.
The 10th-ranked Frenchman is without question in the most wide open quarter of the draw, where Andy Murray is the highest-ranked player. While Murray and Tsonga are the favorites (at least on paper), other seeded challengers include Mikhail Youzhny, Tomas Berdych, John Isner, Tommy Robredo, Marcos Baghdatis, and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.
Dangerous unseeded players in this section include Richard Gasquet, Juan Ignacio Chela, Philipp Petzschner, Viktor Troicki, Thiemo De Bakker, and Lukasz Kubot. Troicki opens with Robredo, while Tsonga could face Kubot in the second round.
Murray, though, got the worst of draws among seeded players. The fourth-ranked Scot will kick off his Roland Garros campaign against Gasquet, who just won the Nice title by upsetting Fernando Verdasco on Saturday. Gasquet, an accomplished clay-court performer, leads the head-to-head series 2-1 and Murray's lone victory was a dramatic five-set comeback win at Wimbledon.
Given the depth of the unseeded players and the lack of top clay-court talent among the seeded ranks, plenty of surprises should be expected from start to finish in the second quarter. If the seeds somehow hold to form, however, Murray would face Berdych in the fourth round and Tsonga would take on Youzhny.
