Juan Monaco and Horacio Zeballos sweep singles matches for Argentina on Saturday, giving the country its fourth World Team Cup championship.
Argentina won the 2010 World Team Cup on Saturday in Dusseldorf, Germany, defeating the United States in two straight singles matches. This is Argentina's fourth title at the event.
Juan Monaco and Horacio Zeballos delivered the cup to Argentina, and both singles stars did it by going to three sets. Monaco kicked off the day by battling past Sam Querrey 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 in one hour and 35 minutes. The Argentine dropped serve three times in the first set, but he was broken only once in each of the last two frames. Three breaks of Querrey in the third--including the last at 5-3--were easily enough for Monaco to prevail.
Zeballos came within one point of clinching the title in straight sets, but he ended up needing two hours and 19 minutes to get the best of Robby Ginepri 6-4, 6-7(7), 7-5. Ginepri saved one match point on his own serve at 5-6 in the second-set tiebreaker, but Zeballos fought back in the third and sealed the victory with a break at 6-5.
"I think my match was difficult, but also his match was incredible," Monaco said of Zeballos. "He was fighting like an animal for, like, three hours. We are very happy because when we came here the goal was to win here for Argentina and we did it."
Argentina last won the World Team Cup in 2007.
