  • Verdasco and Gasquet battle for Nice title

    5/22/10 1:22 PM | Cheryl Murray
Verdasco and Gasquet battle for Nice title Resurgent Richard Gasquet will take on Spaniard Fernando Verdasco for one last title before the French Open.

France’s Richard Gasquet was once in the top 10. He now finds himself ranked 68 in the world and trying to make a comeback after a disastrous 2009 season. Things appear to be looking up for the Frenchman now, though.

Gasquet won the Bordeaux Challenger event last week and saw his ranking soar 14 spots. His appearance in the final this week will boost his ranking again (though not in time for the French Open).

Fernando Verdasco has been prolific this clay season. The Spaniard kicked off the season with an appearance in the final of Monte Carlo, and a win in Barcelona. The fatigued Verdasco was knocked out of Madrid in the third round, but he appears to have rebounded nicely in Nice.

The two men have played on 9 different occasions; Verdasco holds a slight 5-4 lead. The Spaniard is surely in better form, and as the world No. 9, he is by far the more consistent. However, all of the tennis he has played in recent months might be an advantage to Gasquet if he is suffering from fatigue.

With the home court advantage and fresher legs, this might be a Gasquet upset in the making. The Frenchman for the title in 3.

they booed nando several times in the 3rd set ! nando lost his temper quite a few times and was brimming with anger so many times....okay u shud support ur local hero but why boo the opponent?? hate the french crowd for this, as much as they hate spaniards , the more pain rafa gives them by biting those trophies.
