Tomas Berdych and John Isner will be going head-to-head at the World Team Cup on Friday. Isner can clinch a spot in the final for the United States while the Czechs need Berdych to tie up the score.
John Isner will be looking to put the United States in the final of the 2010 World Team Cup when he goes up against Tomas Berdych on Friday in Dusseldorf, Germany. Sam Querrey won his singles match on Thursday for the undefeated Americans, which means they can beat the undefeated Czechs and win the Red Group with an Isner victory.
Isner and Berdych have faced each other just once in their careers and it came last summer on the hard courts of the Legg Mason Classic in Washington, D.C. The 6'9'' American survived a quarterfinal thriller 6-3, 6-7(10), 6-2.
Berdych is a perfect 2-0 so far in Dusseldorf. The 17th-ranked Czech kicked off his week with a three-set triumph over Nicolas Almagro and he followed that up with a straight-set dismissal of Carsten Ball. Isner lost his opening match to Lleyton Hewitt and he was replaced by Robby Ginepri in the United States' next match due to a sore right arm.
If Berdych defeats Isner, the match--and a spot in the final--will come down to a doubles showdown that will most likely feature Bob and Mike Bryan against Czechs Jan Hajek and Lukas Dlouhy.
In Blue Group action, a doubles clash between Argentina and France will determine the finalist. The two teams are tied up at one apiece after splitting singles matches on Thursday. Expected doubles participants are Juan Monaco and Horacio Zeballos for Argentina and Jeremy Chardy and Nicolas Mahut for France.
