  • Baghdatis bombs out of Nice, Verdasco advances

    5/20/10 8:18 PM | Cheryl Murray
Baghdatis bombs out of Nice, Verdasco advances No. 5 seed Marcos Baghdatis was defeated in quarterfinal action in Nice, but No. 2 seed Verdasco successfully advanced to the semis.

Leonardo Mayer def. Marcos Baghdatis 5-7, 6-3, 6-4

No. 5 seed Marcos Baghdatis engaged in a nearly 3 hour marathon match against Argentina’s Leonardo Mayer before finally succumbing 4-6 in the deciding set. The match was a real grinder for both men. Baghdatis had a horrible serving day, which did not help his cause against the resilient Mayer. The Cypriot put in a dismal 46% first serves for the match.

Even the first set was a battle for Baghdatis. The Cypriot was forced to fight off 7 break points on his own serve, and only secured the set-winning break against Mayer as the Argentine was serving to send the opener to a tiebreak.

Mayer continued to blast away at the serve of Baghdatis. In the final two sets, Mayer earned a whopping 17 break points, of which he converted 3. In contrast, the Cypriot had 2 chances in the final two sets. Mayer will take on Fernando Verdasco in the semifinals.

Fernando Verdasco def. Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-4

Fernando Verdasco’s win over Sergiy Stakhovsky was not significantly easier than Mayer’s. Though the Spaniard spent 2 hours and 20 minutes on court, he still needed 3 sets to dispatch of the Ukraine’s Stakhovsky. Verdasco should go into Friday’s semifinal the more rested of the two men.

I think Fer'dasco is wearing himself out again before a GS. He did it last year when he beat Querrey at New Haven right before USO and both went out early there. He's played a lot this clay season and looked a bit gassed at Madrid last week. I would have really liked his chances had he not played so much. Will he ever learn?

agree with you chr18
IT IS stupid for nando to wear him self out so badly, i think he is a contender for RG after rafa-roger and falls in the same league as nole this time. but why is he hurting his chances ?? :S
