Half of the teams have already been eliminated at the World Team Cup, and that means two of the final round-robin matches are virtual semifinals: the United States vs. the Czech Republic and Argentina vs. France.
And then there were four.
In both round-robin groups at the World Team Cup in Dusseldorf, Germany, two undefeated teams will be going head-to-head with a spot in Saturday's final at stake. In the Red Group, the 2-0 Americans will face the 2-0 Czechs, while 2-0 Argentina will battle 2-0 France for Blue Group supremacy.
Only the first singles match between the United States and the Czech Republic is on Thursday's schedule, and it will feature Sam Querrey and Jan Hajek. This will be the first career meeting between the two competitors. Both Querrey and Hajek are undefeated so far this week, having each scored wins over Daniel Gimeno-Traver of Spain and Australian Peter Luczak.
Both of the Argentina-France singles matches will be contested on Thursday. The proceedings will get started with Juan Monaco (1-0 this week) and Jeremy Chardy (1-1), who have faced each other on two previous occasions. Monaco is a perfect 2-0 against the Frenchman, with one of his victories coming on clay.
Eduardo Schwank (1-0 this week) and Paul-Henri Mathieu (1-1) will then square off in what will be a potential clincher for one of the countries depending on the Monaco-Chardy outcome. Schwank and Mathieu have split their two previous matches, both of which were contested on the slow stuff.
