Richard Gasquet and Marcos Baghdatis had no trouble getting to the second round in Nice.
France’s one-time top player Richard Gasquet breezed into the second round with an easy straight set win over Slovakia’s Lukas Lacko. The Frenchman has been struggling, but a win at the Challenger event in Bordeaux had his ranking surging 14 spots last week to No. 68.
Lacko offered very little resistance to Gasquet on Tuesday. The Slovak suffered an early break in the first set, and while he was able to hold Gasquet to just one, he was unable to convert the single chance he had against the Frenchman.
The second set was a complete blowout. Gasquet won all but 11 points in the entire set and he lost just one point on his own serve.
Marcos Baghdatis also advanced to the second round, but he had more difficult passage. France’s Laurent Recouderc kept pace with Baghdatis through most of the first set. The Cypriot had six chances to break, but only converted on one. Recouderc did not earn any break chances in the opening set.
The two men traded breaks of serve in the second set. But just when a tiebreaker seemed certain, Baghdatis secured a second service break to take the match. Baghdatis will take on Simon Greul in the second round.
