Olivier Rochus and Lukasz Kubot moved into the second round after a modest day in the opening round in Nice.
With the French Open less than a week away, most of the top players are resting up, leaving these last tune-up events wide open.
On Monday Belgium’s Olivier Rochus took the court against France’s Adrian Mannarino, who is ranked 289 in the world. The efficient Belgian zoomed through this first round match in an hour and 7 minutes.
The win is the first for the Belgian on the ATP tour since he made the third round of the Miami Masters. His most recent result was a quarterfinal at the Challenger event in Bordeaux, where he lost to Frenchman Richard Gasquet.
Rochus secured 5 service breaks in the match and surrendered only one. The Belgian will take on top seed Robin Soderling in the second round.
Joining Rochus in the second round is Poland’s Lukasz Kubot, who defeated France’s Gianni Mina also in straight sets, though he had a much more difficult time than Rochus. The Frenchman kept up with Kubot until the tail-end of the set, and only gave up 1 service break in the second.
Kubot will take on Potito Starace in the second round.
