Juan Monaco and Tomas Berdych lead their teams to victories at the World Team Cup on Monday. Monaco outlasts Viktor Troicki and Berdych gets the best of Nicolas Almagro.
Juan Monaco (ARG) d. Viktor Troicki (SRB) 1-6, 6-3, 7-6(3)
Monaco survived a back-and-forth affair with Troicki to give Argentina the win in its opening round-robin match against Serbia at the ARAG World Team Cup on Monday in Dusseldorf. Horacio Zeballos had defeated Filip Krajinovic on Sunday to give the Argentines a 1-0 lead and Monaco needed two hours and 24 minutes to finish the job.
After a rough start, Monaco took control by winning the second set and taking a 5-3 lead in the third. The world No. 30 had a match point on Troicki's serve, but the Serb fought it off, held for 4-5, then broke for 5-5 stay alive. In the ensuing tiebreaker, though, Monaco regained control and raced through it seven points to three.
"It was a hard match," said Monaco. "I started a little bit unfocused. With time I was playing a bit better, feeling more aggressive on the baseline. I finished the match well, I think."
Tomas Berdych (CZE) d. Nicolas Almagro (ESP) 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-3
Like Monaco, Berdych played with his team ahead 1-0 and battled back from a set deficit to clinch the round-robin match win. Berdych's victory in two hours and 10 minutes on Monday moved the Czech Republic past Spain, which saw Daniel Gimeno-Traver fall to Jan Hajek in straight sets on day earlier.
The world No. 17 did not lose serve the entire match, and that proved to be decisive after he lost the first set in a tiebreaker. One break in both second and third was enough for Berdych to prevail. Next up for the Czechs is Australia (0-1), while Spain will take on the United States (1-0).
