  • Isner, Querrey drive Americans past Australia

    5/18/10 4:54 AM | Ricky Dimon
Isner, Querrey drive Americans past Australia John Isner and Sam Querrey win the decisive doubles match on Monday to give the United States a 2-1 victory over Australia in round-robin action at the World Team Cup. Next up for the USA is Spain.

The United States is 1-0 at the ARAG World Team Cup in Dusseldorf, Germany after finishing off Australia 2-1 on Monday afternoon.

John Isner and Sam Querrey earned the clinching doubles point with a 5-7, 6-4, 10-8 victory over the Australian duo of Carsten Ball and Paul Hanley. The USA doubles duo fought back from a set and a break deficit to stun the Australians and send them to an 0-1 record in round-robin competition.

Isner made up for his straight-set loss to Lleyton Hewitt on Sunday while Querrey has displayed nerves of steel so far; he put the United States out in front on Sunday by defeating Peter Luczak in three tight sets in a match that saw him stay alive by winning the second set in a 'breaker.

The Americans will face Spain (0-1) on Tuesday. Isner will go up against Nicolas Almagro and Querrey will face Daniel Gimeno-Traver. Bob and Mike Bryan are expected to be available for the USA in doubles having now arrived from Madrid.

In Blue Group action on Tuesday, Horacio Zeballos (Argentina) and Philipp Kohlschreiber (Germany) are set for a singles showdown. The host Germans, who finished runner-up to Serbia last year, suffered a tough loss to France in their first match. So the pressure will be on Kohlschreiber as he looks to keep his country in contention.

Kohlschreiber lost to Jeremy Chardy in easy straight sets on Sunday while Zeballos crushed Serbia's Filip Krajinovic. The Argentines are looking to go 2-0 and mathematically eliminate Germany.
