Marcos Baghdatis and Mario Ancic headline play at the Open de Nice Cote D’Azur on Tuesday.
Marcos Baghdatis vs. Mario Ancic
Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis will look to get a few more matches on clay before the French Open starts on Sunday, but he’ll get a trial by fire in Nice. His first round opponent is Croatia’s Mario Ancic. Baghdatis has lost 4 of the 5 matches he’s played against the Croat. Ancic has had a rough time of late, and his ranking sits at a dismal 417 in the world as a result. The matchup is poor for Baghdatis, but given Ancic’s current form and the fact that clay is not his favorite surface, Baghdatis should advance.
Richard Gasquet vs. Lukas Lacko
France’s one-time top player is still trying to get his career back on track. Richard Gasquet is ranked 68 in the world, and has taken to playing the occasional Challenger event to try to boost his ranking. Lukas Lacko, a Slovakian ranked 72 in the world, is not a clay courter. He had a pair of quarterfinal results, but they came at the beginning of the year on hard courts. He hasn’t won an ATP level match on clay yet this year.
Gasquet is by far the more accomplished clay court player. While he has struggled with his form, he should be able to get past Lacko.
