  • World Team Cup underway in Dusseldorf

    5/17/10 4:21 PM | Ricky Dimon
World Team Cup underway in Dusseldorf Eight national teams are in Dusseldorf, Germany competing for the 2010 World Team Cup. The Serbs are out to defend their 2009 title, but they could be tested by France, Australia, the United States, and others.

The annual ARAG World Team Cup not only provides individual players with a chance to fine-tune their games for the French Open, but it also features eight teams battling for national pride.

Split into two groups for round-robin competition, the eight countries are Germany, France, Argentina, and Serbia in the Blue Group, and Australia, Spain, the United States, and the Czech Republic in the Red Group. Each match is best-of-3 individual matches; two singles followed by a doubles.

The Serbs beat host Germany in last year's championship, but they will be hard-pressed to defend their title with Novak Djokovic not playing and Janko Tipsarevic missing due to injury. That could open the door for teams such as France, Australia, and the United States.

Australia and the USA are locked at 1-1 after splitting singles matches on Sunday. Sam Querrey beat Peter Luczak before Lleyton Hewitt evened the score with a win over John Isner. The French kicked off their campaign with a 2-1 win over the Germans. Jeremy Chardy came up big in both singles and doubles, beating Philipp Kohlschreiber before teaming up with Nicolas Mahut to defeat Kohlschreiber and Christopher Kas.

Still, there is a long way to go before Saturday's finall between the Blue Group and Red Group winners.
