5/13/10 1:35 AM | Cheryl Murray
Briton Andy Murray breezed into the third round with a victory over Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina.
Andy Murray def. Juan Ignacio Chela 6-3, 6-3
In one of his best clay court matches of the year, world No. 4 Andy Murray defeated Juan Ignacio Chela in easy straight sets. The speed of the clay in Madrid allowed Murray to bully Chela from the back of the court – and even at net some of the time. Murray has made his tennis career in part because of his world-class return of serve, a shot that has been absent for several months. It’s back now, though.
The Scot secured 5 service breaks in the match and only surrendered 2. The fact that he was able to do so with a first serve at 44% for the match only speaks to his improved play at the baseline. Murray will take on Victor Hanescu in the third round.
Marin Cilic def. Eduardo Schwank 6-3, 6-0
The other top seed in Murray’s draw, Marin Cilic, blasted through his second round match in just a bit over an hour. The dusty courts once again proved beneficial to big servers like Cilic. Traditional clay-courter Schwank stood no chance against the booming first serves and big ground strokes of the Croat. Cilic secured 5 service breaks for the match and he served up 5 aces for the easy win. Cilic will take on David Ferrer in the third round.
