  • With Roddick out, Lopez handles Hernandez

    5/12/10 8:56 PM | Ricky Dimon
With Roddick out, Lopez handles Hernandez Previously scheduled to play Andy Roddick, Feliciano Lopez eases past Oscar Hernandez in the Madrid second round on Wednesday. Stanislas Wawrinka also advances in straight sets.

Feliciano Lopez d. (LL) Oscar Hernandez 6-1, 6-2

Lopez was prepared to face world No. 8 Andy Roddick, but instead he got Hernandez, an unprepared lucky loser who lasted just one hour and three minutes on Wednesday afternoon. Although he served at a meager 52 percent, Lopez won 21 of 22 first-serve points and was never broken.

The 32nd-ranked Spaniard took control right from the start and his third break of the day finished off the opening set in style. More of the same continued in set two, during which Lopez won all 13 of his first-serve points. After adding two more breaks, Lopez served out the proceedings to set up a third-round showdown with Ernests Gulbis.

    (15) Stanislas Wawrinka d. Leonardo Mayer 6-4, 4-2, retired

Wawrinka advanced to the Madrid third round when Mayer retired midway though the second set with a right shoulder injury. Mayer was competitive until surrendering serve for the first time at 4-5 in the opening frame of play. After one hours and five minutes, the Argentine called it quits. He had earned a break back for 2-3 in the second, but it ended after Wawrinka broke for a 4-2 lead.

Next up for the 23rd-ranked Swiss is friend and countryman Roger Federer.
