Both Tomas Berdych and former Madrid champion David Nalbandian withdrew prior to their first-round meeting, citing injury. The two were replaced by lucky losers Mardy Fish and Michael Russell.
Injury woes continue to plague 2007 Madrid champion David Nalbandian, as he was forced to withdraw before contesting his opener with 11th seed Tomas Berdych Tuesday evening. The Argentine has had numerous bouts with injury this season, halting his comeback after undergoing hip surgery in 2009. The 28-year-old pulled out of Madrid with a left leg issue, leaving his participation at the French Open undetermined.
World No. 16 Tomas Berdych, slated to begin the tournament as the 11th seed, withdrew from competition as well, citing a right hip issue. The former Madrid semifinalist was on course to capture his 23rd match-win of the year.
The winner of the Fish-Russell match will move on to face Jurgen Melzer in the round of 16 on Wednesday.
