Tournament seeds John Isner and Thomaz Bellucci came through their opening-round matches on Tuesday. The players defeated respective opponents Christophe Rochus and Pere Riba to reach round two in Madrid.

Thirteenth seed John Isner rallied from a set deficit to oust qualifier Christophe Rochus Tuesday afternoon, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2. The Serbia Open finalist crushed 21 aces en route to a first-round victory in one hour and 42 minutes. After splitting the first two sets, the American snagged a key break of serve at 2-1 in the decider. Isner, who pocketed 85% of his first-service points, earned an insurance break prior to completing the match.
The 25-year-old is scheduled to face qualifier Santiago Giraldo for a place in the round of 16. Giraldo battled from a set down to defeat Philipp Kohlschreiber on Monday, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.
(16) Thomaz Bellucci def. (WC) Pere Riba 7-6(5), 6-1
Sixteenth seed Thomaz Bellucci made a successful start in Madrid, as he bested hometown wildcard Pere Riba in straight sets. The Brazilian improved his season record to 20-10 after downing the Spaniard in just 88 minutes. Despite some service troubles in the second set, Bellucci pocketed three of 3 break points to take the set comfortably, 6-1.
The 22-year-old will take on Juan Monaco in the second round. The Argentine eased through his opener with Simon Greul Sunday afternoon, 6-1, 6-1.
