5/10/10 2:01 AM | Cheryl Murray
Great Britain’s Andy Murray will look to right a season that has fallen in relative ruin since he lost the final of the Australian Open.
On paper, Andy Murray’s draw in Madrid looks favorable. The other seed in his section is Marin Cilic, who just lost in the final of Munich to Mikhail Youzhny, which means he would likely be tired if he were to meet Murray in the quarterfinals.
David Ferrer is, as always, a threat on dirt. The Spaniard has been a clay court leader this season and would surely be a problem for Murray – but once again, the Scot would not meet him until the quarterfinals.
The real problem for Murray is that even the clay court grinders like Pablo Cuevas and Victor Hanescu are a threat to the Scot on dirt – especially since Murray has been playing terribly since January.
Ferrer is the player that is most likely to come through this section of the draw. The Spaniard is a vicious competitor and there is nobody in his quarter that is even remotely at his level on the dirt. Even if Murray manages to get into the quarters (which is by no means a given), he won’t get past Ferrer.
