Gael Monfils defeated countryman Stephane Robert early Monday to capture his first win since Indian Wells. The 12th seed is joined in the second round by Nicolas Almagro, who took out Viktor Troicki in straight sets.

Twelfth seed Gael Monfils made a successful return to the ATP World Tour on Monday, downing compatriot Stephane Robert in one hour and 24 minutes. The 23-year-old, back from a two-month long layoff with injury, earned three breaks of serve in the opening set. After trailing 0-3 in the second, Monfils rallied to draw level at 5-5. A backhand error from Robert on break point gave Monfils a 6-5 edge.
Monfils ended the afternoon with 5 aces, 26 winners and five of 6 break points converted. He will face either Philipp Petzschner or Fabio Fognini in the next round.
Nicolas Almagro def. Viktor Troicki 6-1, 7-6(3)
Nicolas Almagro survived a second-set surge from first-round opponent Viktor Troicki Monday evening. The Spaniard lost a 5-2 lead in the second set, but held on to win in straights, 6-1, 7-6(3). Troicki looked to regroup late in the match, but fell behind 0-4 in the tie-break. Almagro used his forehand to reach triple match point at 6-3. A final error from the Serb cemented the victory for Almagro in one hour and 39 minutes.
The Spaniard converted four of 9 break point opportunities during the contest. He is slated to meet fourth seed Robin Soderling for a place in the round of 16.

All the Spaniards seemed to have notched up their game for this claycourt season. He's not quite at the same level of Verdasco or Ferrer, but he has a wicked backhand and I'm excited to see how it plays out against Soderling.
