Spain’s David Ferrer made a winning start at the Madrid Masters as the last pre-French Open tournament ramps up.
Thanks to a successful South American clay court swing, Spain’s David Ferrer is winningest player on clay this year. In 5 tournaments on the dirt, Ferrer has made the semifinals or better in each and he even has a tournament win in Acapulco.
Jeremy Chardy of France is ranked 43 in the world, and he is not considered a true clay court threat, but he played well enough in the second set to challenge Ferrer.
The first set was a mess from the Frenchman. Ferrer had a whopping 9 break point chances for the set and he converted on 3 of them. The scoreline is not as lopsided as it might have been because Ferrer gave up a break of his own.
The competitiveness of the second set was due in large part to the inability of both players to hold serve. Each man secured a pair of breaks to force the tiebreaker, but in the end Chardy was no match for Ferrer.
The Spaniard will take on the winner of Marcos Baghdatis and Marco Chiudinelli in the second round.
