Roger Federer is through to the Estoril semifinals after a straight-set defeat of Arnaud Clement on Friday. Next up for Federer is defending champion Albert Montanes.
Roger Federer beat Arnaud Clement 7-6(7), 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the Estoril Open on Friday afternoon. Federer needed one hour and 37 minutes to remain perfect at the tournament, as he took home the title two years ago in his only previous appearance.
Just as he did in his second-round win over Bjorn Phau on Wednesday, Federer pulled through despite failing to showcase his best stuff. The world No. 1 dropped serve at love in the very first game against Clement, but he earned the break back without much trouble at 1-2 after missing a break-point opportunity in his first return game. From there both players held en route to a tiebreaker, with Federer fighting off one break point at 2-2 and Clement saving three at 2-3.
A tense 'breaker saw the world No. 83 grab a rare set point at Federer's expense, but he could not convert. Federer promptly closed out the decider on serve at 8-7.
With momentum in hand, Federer finally went into cruise-control mode. Estoril's No. 1 seed started connecting with his forehand and broke serve easily for a quick 1-0 lead in the second. Federer did not face a break point until he had already secured another break at 4-2 to put the match well out of reach. Clement missed a chance to extend the match when he missed a forehand at 2-5, 30-40, and Federer clinched victory two points later when the Frenchman netted a backhand.
Next up for the 16-time Grand Slam champion is a semifinal clash that will pit Estoril's most recent two champions against each other. Albert Montanes, who beat James Blake in last year's title match, dispatched Pablo Cuevas 6-4, 6-3 on Friday.
