  • Defending champ Montanes still alive in Estoril

    5/8/10 6:43 AM | Ricky Dimon
Defending champ Montanes still alive in Estoril Albert Montanes keeps his title defense hopes alive with a win over Pablo Cuevas on Friday in Estoril. Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and Frederico Gil are also through to the semifinals.

    (4) Albert Montanes d. (8) Pablo Cuevas

Montanes, the 2009 Estoril Open champion, reached the semifinals on Friday after one hour and 29 minutes of play against Cuevas. The Uruguayan was competitive for much of the first set, but an ill-timed poor service game at 4-5 put him in a one-set deficit. Montanes then raced to a 4-1 lead in the second before dropping serve at 4-2. The fouth-seeded Spaniard recovered immediately to get the break back and he served out the proceedings at 5-3. Montanes broke Cuevas five times and won 65 percent of his second-serve return points on the way to a showdown with 2008 champion Roger Federer.

    (5) Guillermo Garcia-Lopez d. (Q) Alberto Martin

Suffering from a stomach illness right from the start, Martin won a shockingly bad five total points against Garcia-Lopez in Friday's quarterfinals. The Spanish qualifier won only one of 17 return points and he took just one of nine points in the second set before calling it quits down 6-0, 2-0. Garcai-Lopez, who had to do nothing other than put a few balls in play, will face Frederico Gil in the semifinals.

Frederico Gil d. (WC) Rui Machado

The fans had plenty of expectations for this one with two Portuguese players taking the court, and to say they were not disappointed would be an understatement. Machado, also dealing with a stomach issue, played high-risk tennis and also finished the job in straight sets before fading in the third and finally going away after two hours and 20 minutes. Gil said afterward that both men played their best tennis and that it was a dream come true to reach the semifinals in his native land. Both Gil and Machado finished with three aces and one double-fault in what was generally a baseline slugfest.
