  • Cilic toughs out quarterfinal win over Almagro

    5/8/10 2:35 AM | Cheryl Murray
Cilic toughs out quarterfinal win over Almagro Marin Cilic was given a stern test in the Munich quarterfinals by Spaniard Nicolas Almagro.

Marin Cilic finds himself safely into the BMW Open semifinals with a tricky three-set win over Nicolas Almagro. The Croat and tournament top seed was solid on the big points in the opening set. Almagro had 3 chances to break, but couldn’t convert on any of them. Cilic had just one opportunity, which he seized to take the set-winning service break.

The Spaniard was able to level the match in the second set, which progressed with no service breaks at all. Once again, Cilic proved impressive on break points, fighting off each of the 5 breaks against him. Almagro, surprisingly proved to be the better server in the match, and was able to take advantage of the second set breaker.

Cilic finally took the match firmly in hand in the third set, with a pair of breaks on Almagro. The Croat will take on No. 5 seed Marcos Baghdatis in the semis.

Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny also advanced on Friday, though in routine fashion against the Czech Republic’s Jan Hernych. The Russian secured the victory in 1 hour and 16 minutes with a 6-1, 6-3 scoreline.
