Top seed Marin Cilic got through his second round match against Simon Greul, but only after the German gave him a test.
Croatia’s Marin Cilic spent two and a half hours on court attempting to get past his second round opponent, Simon Greul. The Croat is not at his best on the clay court; as a tall big-server, his movement is not sufficient to make him a real threat on the dirt. Greul is ranked No. 62, but he’s a solid clay courter which allowed him to challenge the world No. 11.
The first set progressed without a single break of serve. Greul only just edged Cilic in the tiebreaker, but Cilic came back with a vengeance in the second. Greul was broken twice in the second set by the Croat to give Cilic a commanding second set score of 6-2.
The two men traded breaks of serve earlier in the third set, but with a second tiebreaker looming, Greul was broken for a second time to give Cilic the match win.
Marcos Baghdatis had an easier time making his way to the quarterfinals. The Cypriot secured his second clay court win of the season with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Marco Chiudinelli. Baghdatis will take on No. 4 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber in the quarterfinals.
