Croatia’s Marin Cilic advanced to the second round with a victory over Germany’s Michael Berrer.
The countdown continues to the French Open, with just a few weeks to go. With the world’s top 2 players participating elsewhere and Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray taking the week off, Marin Cilic is left as the top seed in Munich.
Predictably, the Croat had little difficulty getting past Michael Berrer. The match lasted sixty-eight minutes, with Cilic surrendering just one service break.
Berrer was notably poor on the big points of the match. The German was a dismal 0 for 4 on break point chances against him. He kept the first set at least somewhat competitive, but Cilic ran away with the second set for the straight set victory.
Also on court in second round action were Mikhail Youzhny and Tomas Berdych. The Czech Republic’s Berdych had a notably difficult time with Pere Riba in the opening set of his match. The Spaniard is ranked just inside the top 100 (at No. 98) and though he spends his time on the Challenger circuit, his skill on clay was displayed against the No. 3 seed.
Youzhny’s road to the quarterfinal was less dramatic. He defeated Germany’s Andreas Beck in just under an hour in a routine 6-3, 6-3 victory.
