  • Monfils, Ljubicic pull out from Estoril

    5/6/10 3:22 PM | Ricky Dimon
Monfils, Ljubicic pull out from Estoril Gael Monfils and Ivan Ljubicic are out of the Estoril Open without playing a single match. Monfils withdraws due to sickness and Ivan Ljubicic is still suffering from a side strain.

Gael Monfils and Ivan Ljubicic withdrew from the Estoril Open on Thursday, costing the tournament two of its top three seeds.

The bad luck continues for Monfils, who has not played since Indian Wells due to a severely bruised left hand. The Frenchman, who had been seeded third this week, came down with food poisoning on Wednesday night. He said he slept for about one hour.

Ljubicic has also been dealing with recent physical problems that have derailed his momentum. The 14th-ranked Croat won the Indian Wells title in March, but then had to pull out of matches in both Miami and Rome. Ljubicic, Estoril's No. 2 seed, is dealing with a side strain.

Monfils was replaced in the draw by David Marrero, who will take on Alberto Martin. Michal Przysiezny took Ljubicic's place and will go up against Portuguese wild card Rui Machado.

Only three seeded players remain behind No. 1 Roger Federer. Defending champion and No. 4 seed Albert Montanes will play No. 8 Pablo Cuevas in the quarterfinals, while No. 5 Guillermo Garcia-Lopez is through to the quarters as the only seeded player in the bottom half of the draw.

Fed, I'll kill you if you don't win this! Haha! No seriously, win it...please!

well an already weak estoril has become weaker..
now the 2nd highest ranked player is montanes..
and bottom half is simply open!!

the tournament is good enough for some decent players to play, otherwise why have the event in the first instance? and why dont ALL players play the SAME tournaments ALL year?

Lopex, clement, chela, montanes, lapentti, granollers, hernandez, garcia-lopez, mayer and massu (plus other high quality players), can all have "their day" and are in the top 50 (or thereabouts), so whilst it might be regarded as a "weaker field", we all know that gulbis (45), benneteau (55) baghdatis,(need to check), all beat federer, so there is always that possibility.

but eelesino, yes. I agree with you. After watching federer's interview, he said he may not have played "beautiful tennis" in his match against Phau, but he toughed it out and got the win. A win (as we all say), is a win. so fed! get the win!

Federer's luck continuing to help in even 250 point tournament ( in line with his FORM )

It's shame on tournament organizer , which is looking like " tournament fixing "

what a shame...might as well give the trophy to federer...

How brilliantly astute of you anand! The tournament organizer obviously fixed the withdrawal of the only two other top 20 players in his event, so he could have two more no name lucky losers come in and draw crowds. Never mind that both Monfils and Ljubicic were in the opposite half of the draw from Fed and so couldn't have prevented his path to the final.
