Marcos Baghdatis came back after a first set deficit to wildcard Peter Gojowczyk to win in 3. Mario Ancic was not as lucky.

Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis secured his first clay court win of the year with a three-set victory over Peter Gojowczyk, the German wildcard. Gojowczyk is ranked 384 in the world and has been struggling even on the Futures tour; his first set win was a surprise against the No. 31 Baghdatis. The Cypriot still showed signs of clay court rust as he fell in a 6-3 hole. Once he got into the second set, Baghdatis raised his level and Gojowczyk predictably was completely outplayed. The German had a chance early in the third set to go up a break, but Baghdatis was able to hold him off. The Cypriot will take on Marco Chiudinelli in the second round.
Daniel Koellerer def. Mario Ancic 7-6(7), 7-5
Croatia’s Mario Ancic had leads in both the first and second sets, but eventually surrendered to Daniel Koellerer in straight sets. Ancic had 5-2 in the first set before his serve fell apart and Koellerer broke back to force a tiebreaker, which Ancic also lost. The second set was a near carbon copy of the first. Ancic had the lead and a 5-3 scoreline before once again faltering on serve. Koellerer will take on Germany’s Philipp Petzschner in the second round.
