(5) Guillermo Garcia-Lopez d. Xavier Malisse 6-2, 7-6(7)
Garcia-Lopez advanced to the second round of the Estoril Open on Tuesday after dismissing Malisse in one hour and 45 minutes. The 40th-ranked Spaniard cruised through the first set thanks a pair of service breaks, including one at 5-2, but Malisse was competitive throughout the second. Garcia-Lopez got a break back at 3-4 and both players held the rest of the way to a tiebreaker. After exchanging early mini-breaks, neither man could manage a return point. Malisse saved a match point at 5-6 and Garcia-Lopez fought off a set point at 6-7 before the No. 5 seed finally finished it off nine points to seven. Next up for Garcia-Lopez is Portuguese wild card Leonardo Tavares.
Daniel Gimeno-Traver d. Nicolas Lapentti 6-3, 3-1, retired
A typical baseline clay-court match ended prematurely when Lapentti retired four games into the second set, giving Gimeno-Traver easy passage into round two. Lapentti won less than half of his points on both first and second serve and he saved none of three break points in the opening frame of play. Gimeno-Traver saved five break points in the second set and he had just held serve for a commanding 3-1 lead when his opponent called it quits with a right knee injury. The Spaniard will take on countryman and No. 4 seed Albert Montanes for a spot in the quarterfinals.
Santiago Giraldo d. Steve Darcis 6-4, retired
Darcis is all the way down at No. 110 in the world due to a host of physical problems and he added to his long list of match retirements on Tuesday. Giraldo advanced to the second round after pulling out a tight first set 6-4, as Darcis called an end to the proceedings right then and there. The 61st-ranked Colombian gained the momentum once and for all when he fought off multiple break points at 3-4. He then broke easily for 5-4 and held serve in the next game to win not only the set, but also the match. Giraldo will face Portugal's own Frederico Gil in second-round action.
