Seeds Tomas Berdych and Mikhail Youzhny breezed through the opening round at the BMW Open in Munich.
Tomas Berdych def. Kevin Krawietz 6-1, 6-1
Tournament No. 3 seed Tomas Berdych completely demolished German wildcard Kevin Krawietz in just under 45 minutes on the opening day of the BMW Open. The Czech man had a poor serving day, putting just 44% of his first serves in, but it made no difference to his result. Krawietz is ranked outside the top 1000 and even without his first serve as a weapon, Berdych had no difficulty getting through the match. The German won just 31% of the points in the quick 2-setter. Berdych will take on the winner of Lukas Lacko and Pere Riba in the second round.
Mikhail Youzhny def. Jeremy Chardy 6-1, 6-4
Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny secured his first clay court victory of the year over France’s Jeremy Chardy in a speedy straight set win that lasted just under an hour. The Russian entered 2 clay court tournaments coming into Munich, but found himself ousted in his first match of each, first to Lleyton Hewitt and then to David Nalbandian. Chardy made things easier on Youzhny by playing poorly on most of the big points of the match. The Frenchman went 1 for 5 on break points against him and 1 for 4 on break points against Youzhny. The Russian will take on Germany’s Andreas Beck in the second round.
