Lleyton Hewitt wasted no time in rushing back to Australia, with the Davis Cup team leader getting his first hit on a specially laid clay court in Brisbane just 48 hours after a second-round loss at the Rome Masters.
The former number one and Davis Cup teammate Peter Luczak took the first hit on Australia’s newest clay court in preparation for next week's tie against Japan.
Hewitt and Luczak both arrived after Rome exits, training under the supervision on captain John Fitzgerald and coach Todd Woodbridge. The clay has been laid over the hardcourt at the Pat Rafter Arena in order not to disturb preparation for the French Open starting in just over three weeks.
Australia need to win the Asia Oceania Group clash in order to return to the World Group of the international competition.
Luczak, who has made his name on the surface, was pleased to see a clay court in Australia. "Just walking in here seeing a red court is fantastic. You don't see that too many times in Australia so it's nice.
"It's got to help us, it’s fairly slow but that's not too bad, that's good for me and Lleyton can play on anything so that's quite good."
Joining the top pair on the squad are Carsten Ball and doubles specialist Paul Hanley, also coming in from Rome.
